Abstract We revisit the concept of a ‘gesture’ and discuss it, in particular, in the context of 3D interaction. We argue that one should distinguish between postures, quasi-postures, and gestures and that the first two should be (and are currently) preferred in 3D interfaces for directly-manipulative interaction with the environment in user-maintained modes. In scientific visualization we saw use cases of quasi-postures, suggesting that they are one way to re-use the same input space in order to facilitate several means of exploration.

Human Computer Interaction Using Vision-Based Hand Gesture Recognition
With the rapid emergence of 3D applications and virtual environments in computer systems; the need for a new type of interaction device arises. This is because the traditional devices such as mouse, keyboard, and joystick become inefficient and cumbersome within these virtual environments. In other words, evolution of user interfaces shapes the change in the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). In...

متن کاملFormalization and Combination of Touch and Point Interaction
Gestural interfaces have been the subject of research in the HCI community for a long time. In contrast to existing examples of multimodal interfaces, which combine freehand gestures with speech, this paper proposes the combination of both touch and point gestures. Touch requires users to actually initiate contact with the interaction surface, whereas point interaction allows them to use hand m...
متن کاملTowards 3D Data Environments using Multi-Touch Screens
The increase in availability of multi-touch devices has motivated us to consider interaction approaches outside the limitations associated with the use of a mouse. The problem that we try to solve is how to interact in a 3D world using a 2D surface multi-touch display. Before showing our proposed solution, we briefly review previous work in related fields that provided a framework for the devel...
متن کاملUnifying Events from Multiple Devices for Interpreting User Intentions through Natural Gestures
As technology evolves (e.g. 3D cameras, accelerometers, multitouch surfaces, etc.) new gestural interaction methods are becoming part of the everyday use of computational devices. This trend forces practitioners to develop applications for each interaction method individually. This paper tackles the problem of interpreting gestures in a multiple ways of interaction scenario, by focusing on the ...
